The Tarot assigns him no number. 0 is a symbol of our own limitation, our need to account for everything and everyone. There is no such thing as nothing.
The Fool refuses to be accounted for. He is neither the point of setting out nor the point of arrival. It is always a dangerous ambiguity as to whether he is walking a path or merely wandering.
The Fool carries with him all that he needs. He has renounced all else, and in that he has surpassed all but the final card, The World.
There is a small animal nipping at the heels of the Fool. The animal is there to remind him that others have needs too.
